The preliminary numbers from the Georgia Department of Public Safety are in for Thanksgiving Weekend 2010. At first glance, it appears that the numbers of crashes, accident injuries, and fatalities are significantly lower than the statistics for Thanksgiving Weekend 2009. However, it is important to note that the Georgia accidents investigated by the almost 500 local police and sheriff departments are not yet included in the 2010 numbers, which will increase when that reporting is completed.
Accidents Investigated by Georgia State Patrol
Over the holiday weekend which is defined as from 6 p.m. Wednesday evening to midnight on Sunday, eleven people died in Georgia motor vehicle accidents. Four of the deaths were in the metro Atlanta area. Georgia State Patrol also reported 520 car accidents and 231 accident injuries during this holiday weekend.
Among the accidents investigated by the Georgia State Patrol were the deaths of an 82-year-old pedestrian who was hit by a car while leaving a high school football game in Atlanta, and a double fatality that occurred when a car hit a tree in Cherokee County.
We extend our condolences to the families of all those killed in Georgia car accidents over Thanksgiving weekend, and we send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to all of those who were injured.
