The accident, which caused a two-hour traffic backup, killed a woman and injured two children when a SUV and tractor-trailer collided on I-85 southbound in Gwinnet County.
The wreck occurred near Steve Reynolds Boulevard when a southbound tractor-trailer changed lanes, forcing a Nissan Pathfinder out of its lane and into the side of a box truck, said Cpl. Jake Smith, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.
The Pathfinder, going at a significant rate of speed, hit a steep hill between I-85 and the interstate ramp, Smith said.
Flipping over several times, the Pathfinder ejected the woman from the front passenger seat.
The woman died from her injuries and as of late Monday her identity was not being released.
The children were transported to Children’s HOspital at Egleston, along with a man who was in the car with them, Smith said, and all three are expected to survive.
Since the driver of the tractor-trailer did not stop, officers with the department’s accident investigation unit located the truck in Cobb County, identified the driver and interviewed him, Smith said.
The driver of the box truck was not injured and stopped and cooperated with investigators, the spokesman said.
The investigation is on-going and no arrests have been made.
