Older drivers may have more trouble seeing, they may be more apt to suffer a medical emergency while driving, and they may have slower reflexes than younger drivers. However, your children may be safer driving with your parents than they are in your own car.

According a recent study at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, kids are twice as safe in their grandparents' car as they are in vehicles driven by their own parents. The study's conclusion is exactly the opposite of what researchers predicted it to be. The researchers believed that since older drivers get into more accidents than younger drivers children would have a greater risk of injury in their grandparents' car. The study, published in the journal Pediatrics looked at car accidents involving 217,976 children from 15 states between 2003 - 2007.

Why Are Children Safer Riding With Their Grandparents?

The study did not investigate why children may be safer with their grandparents than with their parents. However, researchers speculate that grandparents may be more careful with their grandkids in the car and that grandparents may be in less of a hurry than parents.

Is the News All Good?

The study did reveal one area of concern for grandparent drivers, however. According to the study, grandparents are less likely to properly restrain children in the required car seats.
