The difference between uninsured and underinsured coverage is really when the insurance coverage would be used. It's one policy, usually called UM, but it will come into play under two different scenarios. If an uninsured driver hits you, meaning they have no auto insurance, that is when the uninsured coverage will take effect. If you are hit by a driver that has the minimum amount of coverage that the state requires, but the cost of your injuries or damages to your property exceeds what their insurance will cover, then the underinsurance coverage will come into play. Your own underinsured coverage will supplement that at-fault drivers insurance.
