What are the Georgia Booster Seat Laws?

A: On January 1, 2012 a new law, which has already been signed by Governor Deal, will take effect in Georgia. The law will require that more children be restrained in booster seats than the current law requires.

The law was passed to decrease the number of accident injuries affecting school age children. Over the past five years, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta has been tracking what happens to six and seven-year-old children who are involved in Georgia car accidents. According to Children's Healthcare, 95% of children who are injured were not properly restrained in the car at the time of the crash.*

Thus, beginning in January, Georgia drivers will be required to have almost all children in booster seats until their eighth birthdays. Exceptions are made for children who weigh more than 40 pounds or who are more than four feet nine inches tall.
